Air Botswana Grapples with Financial Challenges Despite Government Support

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Salakae has disclosed that Air Botswana has received substantial government assistance totaling over BWP800 million between 2019 and 2024.

This funding included COVID-19 relief, debt coverage, and critical maintenance support, such as BWP149 million for a "refleeting exercise" and BWP57 million for engine overhauls. Despite this, the national carrier continues to face financial strain due to reduced passenger numbers and revenue losses, exacerbated by austerity measures affecting travel demand.

During the same period, Air Botswana expanded its fleet with three pre-owned Embraer jets, purchased in 2024 for a combined USD18.5 million. These additions bring the total fleet to six aircraft, including two new ATR72-600s acquired in 2018. However, one jet, the Embraer E170, is currently grounded, awaiting a mandatory BWP57 million maintenance check a cost the struggling airline is struggling to cover.

The Minister acknowledged the airline's precarious position, citing operational budget shortfalls and mounting maintenance expenses. With economic conditions worsening, questions remain about Air Botswana's long-term viability without further government intervention or restructuring.
