Gaborone City Council has embarked on a mission to reclaim Botswana’s heritage by renaming streets with colonial names to honor local heroes. The decision announced by Mayor Oarabile Senyolonyolo Motlaleng aims to promote the city's cultural identity and give recognition to those who have shaped its history.

This move is part of broader efforts to decolonize the city's landscape and assert its African identity. "We have taken a decision as Gaborone City Council to remove all colonial names from our streets and replace them with those of our own heroes," Mayor Motlaleng said.
